[Video] How does a dv/dt filter or sine wave filter affect the output of a frequency converter?

Discover the effects of not installing an output filter on a variable frequency drive with the following video of the experiment conducted by Francesc Fornieles, Power Quality product manager at Vector Energy. We explore the results without a filter on two different cable lengths: 100 meters and 200 meters. Observe how the PWM output peaks are affected under these conditions and how to mitigate it with dV/dt filters and a sine wave filter.

You will see how these problems are solved by installing two essential types of filters: the DVT output dV/dt filter for variable frequency drives, and the SNF output sine wave filter for variable frequency drives. With the DVT filter, the PWM output peaks are limited, while with the SNF filter a smooth and controlled sine waveform is achieved.

When the output of a pulse-width modulation (PWM) drive is not filtered, several undesirable effects can occur:

Electromagnetic interference (EMI): PWM can generate rapid, sharp voltage spikes, which can cause electromagnetic interference in other nearby electrical equipment, affecting its operation and accuracy.

High-frequency currents: Unfiltered, high-frequency currents generated by PWM can flow through the electrical system, which can cause excessive heating in components, damage to cables and other connected electronic devices.

Premature motor wear: The unfiltered waveform can cause unwanted voltages and currents in the motor, which can lead to premature wear, loss of efficiency, and possibly long-term motor failure.

Power quality issues: Uncontrolled voltage and current spikes can contribute to power quality issues on the power grid, such as harmonics and waveform distortion, which can negatively impact other electrical equipment connected to the same grid.
